A flat lay pictographic map of orientation for the Gulf’s formerly enslaved. During the seventeenth and nineteenth century, African slaves contributed to the pearl diving industry. Qatar announced the Abolition of Slavery in 1956. Africans are part of the Gulf’s communities, yet their narratives remain marginalised and disconnected from broader discourses and global social movements. The Map of Orientation preserves the diverse Gulf identities in the past and present.
